Funky Tomato

IMG_1486Never saw a tomato as weird as this one.  It grew a little beak so I felt obliged to give it a tail and eyes and a tree to live in!!!!

Birthday Eating Bash

A great start to the day.  Turned on the wall oven to bake croissants for a special birthday breakfast and there were bright flashes and buzzing sounds from behind the control panel and thick acrid black smoke started belching out.  I turned off but the crackles didn't stop immediately. So after deciding nothing was on fire and as it was too early to phone the estate agent we chose to evacuate the house to avoid the toxic fumes.  Any excuse to visit Mr. Percival for a gourmet breakfast!! mr percival brealfast

I had the sweet corn fritter with bacon tomato and lettuce, salsa and sour cream, and a share of my daughter’s Chai Late.  Small fry had some toasted fruit bread full of chunks of fig, and raisin.

Then home again to play in the sandpit and wait for the electrician.  It is a beautiful  summer day in Melbourne today after yesterday’s freezing conditions. IMG_1430 No electrician appeared so out again for the planned birthday lunch at Satsuki Japanese Cafe.  Daughter insisted I wear hat sunscreen and glasses for the walk ( a bit like shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted but I appreciate her care).   Little miss K was a bit out of sorts in a 2 year old kind of way until her sushi arrived and she got stuck in.  She loves her sushi.

Daughter’s Miso Soup arrived piping hot with a wonderful fragrant steam rising from the surface.  And then my dish came….  I couldn’t choose what to have from the mouth watering menu, so daughter ordered for me.  Duck breast all delicately carved and arranged on a bed of soba noodles with a perfect salad and delectable sauce. What a treat!!

So on the way home it was time to visit the op shop for an update to the autumn wardrobe. Found 2 very interesting long sleeve tees while Miss K tested out a rather loud musical toy and the old dears behind the counter enjoyed watching her but were looking forward to the peace after our departure.

Well after a well earned nap it was time to head into the city for the final meal of the day.  We went to Tsindos Greek restaurant and met up with the other grandparents.  Shared several garlicky delectable dips and 3 main courses were ample for all of us.  A great end to my gastronomic birthday.  Peeked into a cake shop that should have sent us drooling but being so completely full we just admired.

Oh yes and as I forgot to take the camera to the restaurant I don’t have any pictures.  I did go looking for some pics and recipes for Greek food to add here and found a  great blog, have a look at Kalofagos.com Greek food and beyond .

Ergonomic Intimacy

IMG_1279Its a cold and blustery afternoon. Miss "twoandahalf" thrusts her delightfully soft little warm chubby paw into my cold wrinkled one, chattering and singing as we head for the park. She has a touch of the snuffles not helped any by the wind. We collect fallen leaves on the way and she stops calling me Nanny. Suddenly my first name manages to get used sometimes twice or even thrice in every sentence. I ignore it..".kinda cute", I decide.  She is just getting intimate, no disrespect... I start calling her "Miss K"

IMG_1282One hand full of leaves and twigs and the other clutching mine, Miss K doesn't have much choice. It is physically impossible to wipe her runny nose with her immobilised sleeve  (if you get the picture), so pausing for a brief moment she smears her bubbly snot on my sleeve. A true gesture of ergonomic intimacy!!!

Bright and Beautiful

I have been sorting pictures for my Indian Travel Journal and just couldnt stop feasting my eyes on these gorgeous design from a Buddhist Monastery in Veranasi.  I love the combinatin of organic and geometric.  I have extracted these two motifs and cropped them square. (the blue border is mine)

Isn’t it wonderful?  I love the leaves and the water around it and the colour combinations

Playing Around with Paint

I had great fun playing around with my paints and making these samples.

I am not sure how I am going to  use them yet but I will probably have fun in Photoshop changing the colours around and layering them into some of my flower photographs.

I really enjoy experimenting in this way.

Windows Live Writer

I have just discovered Windows Live Writer and I am told it will make writing up my blog a whole lot simpler as I always get in a mess with Blogger when I am adding pictures and trying to wrap the text.  In fact I get downright frustrated!!!  But wow that was very easy…easy peasy.  Thankyou Windows Live, blogging has just got whole lot easier
All my work is for sale here , why not take a look

Chamber Music

The concert was such a treat, the musicians
obviously enjoyed playing as much as we did listening. Three cheers for the Chamber Philarmonia Cologne for such a performance in extreme heat.  I don't think it gets into the 90s in Cologne.
I loved the third movement of the Four Seasons when the strings held their violins on their laps like mini guitars and played a gentle pizzicato.
The audience size was disappointing,  a lot of people don't know just what they missed.

lunch

Lunch today was a bit of a "use-a-thon", but it turned out quite a feast.  Leftover potatoes, hard boiled egg, cos lettuce,  tomatoes and Lebanese cucumber from  a friend's garden, home made mayo, anchovies, and a few smoked sprats.  And when I had arranged it all on the plates it looked fresh and photogenic!!!!

Vivaldi

Tonight I am going to a concert with the Cologne Chamber Orchestra playing Vivaldi Four Seasons. This is an extremely rare treat. Living in a small country town we dont often have the opportunity to hear musicians of this calibre and they will be playing in a venue with great acoustics .  I couldn't find a clip of the Cologne Chamber, so I offer you Sarah Chan playing the "Summer" movement.  Actually I think "Winter" is my favourite as it makes me cry and sends shivers down my spine. Actually Winter would go down pretty well as a cooler at the moment as the heat here has been quite unbearable.
